Chapter 3 - The Bruises With Different Stories

The bruises appeared slowly.
One on Noah’s shoulder.
Another above his knee.
A thin mark across his back.
Each time, Lena had an explanation.
He fell from a chair.
He ran into a door.
He played too roughly at preschool.
Children got bruises, she reminded Aaron.
Aaron knew that was true.
But Noah’s behavior had changed too.
He stopped sleeping through the night.
He wet the bed after returning from Lena’s house.
Whenever someone raised a hand too quickly, he ducked.
At preschool, he drew the same picture three times.
A small blue figure.
A tall black figure.
And a long brown line in the black figure’s hands.
The teacher asked who it was.
Noah tore the paper.
The preschool counselor contacted both parents.
Travis attended the meeting with Lena.
He described Noah as overly sensitive.
He said Aaron filled the child’s head with frightening stories because he wanted full custody.
Lena agreed.
Aaron sat across the table, stunned.
Afterward, he asked Lena to speak privately.
“Look at him,” Aaron said. “Something is happening.”
Lena folded her arms.
“You keep questioning everything I do.”
“This isn’t about you.”
“It always becomes about taking him from me.”
“I want him safe.”
“He is safe.”
Travis opened the classroom door.
“Everything okay?”
Lena immediately stepped toward him.
Aaron saw it then.
The way her shoulders tightened.
The way she checked Travis’s expression before answering.
She was afraid of him.
But when Aaron asked her directly, she became angry.
“Stop trying to turn me against the only person who has supported me.”
The following week, Noah arrived for visitation with a swollen finger.
He said Travis closed it in a drawer.
Lena said it was an accident.
Noah looked at the floor.
Aaron took him to urgent care.
The doctor found no fracture, but documented the injury.
That night, Noah climbed into Aaron’s bed.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, buddy?”
“If I tell the truth, will Mommy get in trouble?”
Aaron’s chest tightened.
“What truth?”
Noah pulled the blanket over his face.

“Travis says Mommy will go away if I tell.”
👉 Travis was not only frightening Noah—he had convinced the boy that speaking would destroy his mother.
