Chapter 12 - The Lies That Ended the Marriage

Two years earlier, Lena received an anonymous message.

It contained screenshots of Aaron supposedly flirting with a woman from his company.

The messages included private details.

A hotel name.

A business trip.

A photograph of Aaron entering a restaurant with a blonde woman.

Lena confronted him.

Aaron denied the affair.

The woman was a commercial architect attending a meeting with Derek and three clients.

But the photograph had been cropped to remove everyone else.

More messages appeared.

Aaron’s words sounded real because many were real.

They had been copied from conversations with Lena and rearranged.

At the time, Travis worked for the company that managed Aaron’s business software.

He had access to archived communications.

Aaron fired him after discovering unauthorized downloads from customer accounts.

Travis threatened to ruin him.

Aaron did not take the threat seriously.

Three months later, Lena filed for divorce.

Travis appeared in her life through a neighborhood support group.

He listened while she described Aaron’s betrayal.

He told her she deserved someone honest.

By the time Aaron learned Travis was dating her, the separation had become hostile.

Lena believed Aaron’s objections were jealousy.

The garage files revealed the truth.

Travis created the fake accounts.

He sent the altered screenshots.

He attended the support group because he knew Lena would be there.

He did not accidentally enter the family.

He targeted it.

But revenge against Aaron was only part of the motive.

After accessing the family’s financial records, Travis discovered Noah’s savings account and the potential value of Lena’s house.

He saw an opportunity to punish Aaron and make himself wealthy.

Investigators recovered a message Travis sent to an old gambling contact.

I took his wife, his house, and soon I’ll take his kid out of the picture legally.

Aaron read the sentence inside the hospital waiting room.

Derek stood beside him.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Aaron had spent two years wondering whether his marriage ended because he failed Lena.

Now he knew someone had engineered the destruction.

But the knowledge did not erase Lena’s choices.

She had ignored Noah’s fear.

She had lied to police.

She had protected Travis even after she knew he was dangerous.

Aaron looked through the window at his sleeping son.

“Whatever happened between us,” he said, “she had to protect him.”

Derek nodded.
