Chapter 6 - The Voice Message From the Closet
Noah owned a small children’s tablet.
Aaron had bought it for video calls.
After Travis moved in, the calls became shorter.
Then they stopped completely.
Travis claimed the device was broken.
One night, Noah found it inside a box in the hallway closet.
The battery held three percent.
He pressed Aaron’s picture.
The call failed, but the tablet allowed him to leave a voice message.
“Daddy,” Noah whispered. “I’m in the coats.”
Fabric rustled around him.
“Travis is mad because I saw the papers.”
Aaron listened to the message at 11:42 p.m.
“What papers?” he asked the silent screen.
Noah’s recording continued.
“He says Mommy signed Daddy’s name.”
A door slammed in the background.
Noah inhaled sharply.
“Travis has the bat.”
The message ended.
Aaron called Lena.
No answer.
He called again.
Travis answered.
“Noah is asleep.”
“I just received a message from him.”
“Old recording.”
“He said your name.”
“Kids imagine things.”
“Let me speak to my son.”
“You’re harassing this household.”
Travis ended the call.
Aaron contacted police for a welfare check.
An officer visited the house.
Lena met him at the door.
She said Noah had experienced a nightmare but was safe.
Travis stood behind her holding the sleeping child.
The officer observed no visible emergency.
He left.
The next morning, Aaron drove to the preschool.
Noah was absent.
Lena said he had a stomach virus.
For three days, no one outside the house saw him.
On the fourth day, Lena finally brought him to a custody exchange.
Noah ran toward Aaron.
Then Travis called his name sharply.
The boy stopped.
He looked back.
Travis tapped two fingers against his own lips.
Be quiet.
Aaron saw it.
So did Derek.
But Lena pretended not to.
During the drive, Noah refused to discuss the closet message.
He only said, “Mommy cries when Travis sleeps.”
Aaron wanted emergency custody.
His attorney filed the request.
The hearing was scheduled for the following week.
Travis learned about it that afternoon.
That night, he removed the doorbell camera’s indoor access from Lena’s phone.
