Chapter 15 - The Visit Behind the Glass
The court approved one supervised visit.
A child therapist sat nearby.
Aaron watched through one-way glass.
Lena entered the room carrying no gifts.
The therapist had advised her not to use toys or candy to buy comfort.
Noah sat at a small table with his cast resting on a pillow.
When he saw his mother, he moved closer to the therapist.
Lena stopped several feet away.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
Noah did not answer.
She sat on the floor so she would not tower over him.
“I need to tell you something.”
The therapist reminded her to use simple words.
Lena nodded.
“Travis hurt you. I knew he was scary, and I did not stop him.”
Noah looked at her.
“Why?”
Lena began crying.
But she did not ask him to comfort her.
“I was scared. I made bad choices because I was scared.”
“You stood by the door.”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t open it.”
“No.”
Noah touched his cast.
“Uncle Derek opened me.”
Lena pressed her lips together.
“He helped you get outside.”
“He came.”
“Yes.”
“Daddy came.”
“Yes.”
Noah’s eyes filled.
“You didn’t.”
The truth settled over the room.
Lena lowered her head.
“I am sorry.”
Noah turned away.
The therapist ended the visit after twenty minutes.
Outside, Lena saw Aaron.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
“This isn’t about me.”
“I know.”
“You have to stop making Noah responsible for your feelings.”
“I know that too.”
Aaron had heard those words from her before.
This time, however, Lena followed them with action.
She surrendered her access to Noah’s accounts.
She signed the house into a protected trust that Travis could never touch.
She provided investigators with every password and message.
She entered an intensive counseling program for victims who had also failed to protect their children.
The prosecutor charged her with child endangerment and obstruction.
Because she cooperated early and testified, she was offered a plea agreement involving probation, mandatory treatment, community service, and supervised contact only.
She accepted without argument.
Travis rejected every offer.
He insisted he had never struck Noah.
He called the camera footage misleading.
Then prosecutors enhanced the audio from the open phone call.
In the background, Lena could be heard saying something moments before the attack.
“Travis, you already hurt Aaron. Don’t hurt his son too.”
Investigators replayed the sentence.
