Chapter 16 - The Crash Travis Called an Accident
Three weeks before the porch attack, Aaron’s truck lost control on a wet highway.
The steering locked during a curve.
He struck the guardrail but escaped with minor injuries.
A mechanic blamed a damaged steering component.
Aaron assumed it was bad luck.
Lena knew better.
The night before the crash, she saw Travis return home with grease on his hands.
He said he had helped a friend repair a vehicle.
Later, she found a photograph on his phone.
Aaron’s truck sat in the parking lot outside Noah’s preschool.
The image had been taken beneath the front wheel.
Lena confronted Travis.
He laughed.
“You think I sabotaged his truck?”
She demanded an answer.
Travis grabbed her wrist.
“Accidents happen to men who refuse to leave families alone.”
Lena was terrified.
But instead of warning Aaron, she remained silent.
Travis promised it had only been a threat.
He claimed he never touched the truck.
The recovered garage files proved otherwise.
Police found a receipt for a specialized tool used to damage the steering linkage.
Security footage from a nearby business showed Travis beneath Aaron’s vehicle.
His phone location placed him there for twelve minutes.
The highway crash had not been an accident.
Travis believed Aaron would be seriously injured.
When Aaron survived, Travis accelerated the custody plan.
On the day of Noah’s attack, Travis thought Aaron was attending a construction conference four hours away.
He did not know Aaron had canceled after receiving the child’s voice message.
He believed Derek was across town at work.
He believed no one could arrive before Noah repeated the lie.
The attempted harm to Aaron changed the entire case.
Travis was charged with aggravated assault, child abuse, kidnapping conspiracy, fraud, identity theft, and attempted murder.
When Aaron learned that Lena had known about the threat, he struggled to remain calm.
“You let me pick Noah up in that truck.”
“I was afraid Travis would know I warned you.”
“Our son could have been inside.”
“I know.”
“No, Lena. You understand it now. That is different.”
She accepted the words.
There was no defense.
Her silence had nearly placed Noah inside a sabotaged vehicle.
The upcoming trial would force Lena to admit that publicly.
