Chapter 7 - The Promise Lena Couldn’t Keep
Aaron met Lena in a grocery-store parking lot.
She had asked him to come alone.
For the first time in months, Travis was not beside her.
Lena looked exhausted.
Dark circles framed her eyes.
“Withdraw the emergency custody request,” she said.
“Tell me Noah is safe.”
“He will be.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“Travis is under pressure.”
“From stealing Noah’s money?”
Lena looked around the parking lot.
“He says he can replace it.”
“With what?”
“A property deal.”
Aaron stepped closer.
“What has he done to our son?”
“Nothing serious.”
The words left her mouth before she realized how terrible they sounded.
Aaron stared at her.
“There is no acceptable amount of harm to a four-year-old.”
Lena began crying.
She admitted Travis shouted.
He broke toys.
He used the baseball bat to frighten Noah when the child refused to repeat things for the custody consultant.
“He never hit him with it,” she insisted.
“Yet?”
Lena covered her face.
Travis had threatened to send the forged bank records to police.
He told her every signature would lead back to her.
He claimed Aaron would get full custody and Noah would grow up believing his mother was a criminal.
“So you let Travis scare him?”
“I kept thinking I could fix it.”
“You cannot fix abuse by hiding it.”
Aaron begged her to leave with him.
He offered to call an attorney.
To explain everything to investigators.
Lena almost agreed.
Then her phone vibrated.
A photograph appeared.
Travis was standing beside Noah’s preschool bed.
The message beneath it read:
COME HOME NOW.
Lena panicked.
She drove away before Aaron could stop her.
At home, Travis demanded to know what she had said.
“Nothing.”
He showed her an audio recording from inside her car.
He had hidden a tracking device beneath the seat.
He had heard the entire conversation.
“You tried to betray me.”
Lena begged him not to involve Noah.
Travis smiled.
“Then tomorrow, you will sign the custody affidavit. And Noah will tell the judge his father scares him.”
“He won’t say that.”
“Children say whatever they’re taught.”
From the hallway, Noah listened.
He understood only one thing.
Travis wanted him to lie about Daddy.
