Chapter 8 - The Test Dante Did Not Resist

Dante offered immediate DNA testing.

Not through a Moretti doctor.

Through an independent hospital Elena selected.

“No private laboratories,” she said.

“Agreed.”

“No security inside the room.”

“Agreed.”

“No one receives the result before I do.”

“Agreed.”

His willingness surprised her.

The test required two days.

During that time, Elena stayed in a secure hotel room arranged by Miriam, not Dante.

Police photographed her torn uniform and the marks on her shoulder.

Victoria was released on bail with orders not to contact Elena.

Nathan publicly described the incident as an unfortunate conflict with a former employee.

He denied the financial records were genuine.

Vale Crest’s board opened an emergency investigation.

Dante suspended all negotiations.

The company’s stock fell.

Employees began discovering that their benefit accounts were empty.

Anger spread across every property.

Elena spent the first night reading news reports about Dante.

He had assumed control at twenty-three after his father died.

Violence followed.

Rival businesses burned.

Witnesses disappeared from cases.

No conviction connected directly to Dante.

But fear surrounded his name.

The next morning, he requested a meeting in the hospital cafeteria.

A public place.

Elena agreed.

Dante sat across from her without guards at the table.

“I searched for you every year.”

“Rosa said the family was compromised.”

“She was right.”

“You knew?”

“Not then.”

He explained that the attack killed their parents and several guards.

Nicholas blamed a rival family.

Dante grew up seeking revenge against that rival.

Years later, evidence emerged suggesting the accusation was false.

Nicholas discouraged further investigation.

Dante allowed himself to be distracted by power struggles.

“I wanted to believe the man who raised me,” he said.

“So did I.”

Dante looked at the locket.

“I have the matching one.”

He placed it on the table.

Inside was the same fountain photograph.

The right half.

Elena’s pendant held the left.

Together, the images formed their mother standing behind both children.

Elena’s eyes filled.

Dante did not reach for her.

He waited.

The hospital called that afternoon.

The probability of sibling relationship exceeded 99.99 percent.

Elena read the result first.

Then handed it to Dante.

He closed his eyes.

For twenty-two years, he had imagined finding a grave.

Instead, his sister was alive.

Working inside a restaurant owned by the family connected to her disappearance.

Dante whispered her name.

“Elena Moretti.”

She looked at the document.

“My name is also Elena Marquez.”

Dante nodded.

“You decide what you keep.”

That answer opened the first small space for trust.

👉 The DNA restored their blood relationship, but Rosa’s ledger would determine whether Dante could survive the truth about the family he had inherited.
