Chapter 17 - Sofia’s Room

Dante had preserved their mother’s rooms exactly as they were left.

No one entered without him.

When his confinement ended, he asked Elena whether she wanted to see them.

She agreed.

The estate no longer had armed men filling every corridor.

It was under independent management while ownership questions were resolved.

Dante unlocked Sofia’s sitting room.

Dust covers protected the furniture.

Books lined the walls.

A second silver locket lay inside a velvet box.

Sofia had ordered one for herself.

Beneath it was a letter addressed to both children.

The letter had never been delivered.

My Dante and Elena,

One day, people will tell you that our name must be protected at any cost.

Do not believe them.

A family name that survives only through silence deserves to change.

Dante sat down.

Their mother had written the warning before the attack.

She knew the danger.

She also knew the culture around it.

Elena found design plans for the marble fountain.

Sofia intended the estate to become a school for children of employees.

After her death, the plan disappeared.

Dante had used parts of the property for meetings and private enforcement.

Shame crossed his face.

Elena touched the drawings.

“Finish what she wanted.”

“You want the estate?”

“I want it to stop being a monument to men.”

They created the Sofia Moretti Center for Worker Justice and Financial Education.

The estate’s private offices became classrooms.

The ballroom became a training hall.

The old security wing became a legal clinic.

Children of hotel, restaurant, shipping and construction workers received scholarships.

Dante transferred his ownership interest into an independent charitable trust.

Elena did the same with hers.

Neither sibling could sell the property privately.

The fountain remained at the center.

Rosa’s photograph was placed beside Sofia’s.

Not as a servant beneath an employer.

As the woman who carried Elena through the gate and kept her alive.

During the opening ceremony, Elena stood between both portraits.

Two mothers.

One by birth.

One by choice.

Neither had been perfect.

Both had tried to protect her inside systems built by dangerous men.

Dante joined her after the guests left.

“Do you forgive Rosa?”

Elena looked toward the fountain.

“Some days.”

“Nicholas?”

“No.”

Dante nodded.

May you like

He understood forgiveness was not the price of healing.

👉 The estate finally served the future Sofia imagined, while Elena prepared to return to the restaurant where humiliation first exposed her identity.
