Chapter 4 - The Money Missing From Every Paycheck
Elena first noticed the payroll fraud through a dishwasher named Luis.
His daughter needed dental surgery.
The employee medical fund should have paid part of the cost.
The insurer said Luis’s coverage had been canceled three months earlier.
His paychecks still showed deductions.
Elena compared statements from other employees.
The same thing had happened to dozens of people.
Retirement contributions were missing.
Insurance premiums had not reached providers.
Emergency-assistance money had vanished.
Aurelian employed only sixty people.
Vale Crest Hotels employed more than four thousand.
If the pattern extended across the company, millions were missing.
Elena used her breaks to trace account names.
The deductions flowed into a Vale Crest benefit account.
From there, regular “administration fees” moved to Silver Fountain Consulting.
Silver Fountain paid Victoria’s credit cards, private travel and luxury-property expenses.
Other payments went to Nathan’s restructuring fund.
The company was hiding a severe cash crisis.
Nathan had borrowed against future hotel revenue.
Two failed resorts consumed hundreds of millions.
The Moretti investment was supposed to fill the hole before lenders discovered the benefit accounts had been raided.
Elena copied the transactions.
She sent encrypted files to a labor attorney named Miriam Shaw.
Miriam agreed the records appeared criminal.
“Leave the building,” she told Elena.
“Not yet.”
“You have enough for regulators to investigate.”
“I need the historical Silver Fountain file.”
“The Richard Vale payment?”
“Yes.”
“You are mixing a family mystery with an active fraud.”
“They connect.”
Elena believed Nathan had reopened his father’s shell company because he understood how it had once been used.
Perhaps he also possessed records identifying the Moretti traitor.
She entered Nathan’s executive office during a private party.
The door had been left unlocked while staff delivered champagne.
Inside a cabinet, she found old ledgers and a sealed acquisition folder prepared for Dante.
The proposed deal concealed Vale Crest’s liabilities.
If Dante invested, Moretti capital would repay stolen employee funds before anyone noticed.
Nathan would then claim the company had never been insolvent.
Elena photographed everything.
A shadow moved behind her.
Victoria stood in the doorway.
“What are you doing?”
Elena closed the cabinet.
“Delivering wine.”
“Without wine?”
Victoria looked at the phone in Elena’s hand.
Then at the open file.
Recognition hardened her expression.
She did not know who Elena truly was.
She only knew a waitress had discovered the fraud before Dante signed.
Victoria called security.
Elena escaped through the service staircase before guards arrived.
But she had left one item beneath the desk.
