Chapter 15 - Dante Told the Whole Truth
Dante entered court without the Moretti crest on his lapel.
For most of his adult life, the symbol had entered rooms before he did.
That morning, he appeared only as a witness.
The prosecutor asked about Nicholas.
Dante described being raised by him after the attack.
Nicholas taught him that mercy invited betrayal.
That police were tools for weak families.
That loyalty mattered more than innocence.
Dante admitted ordering men threatened.
Admitted collecting illegal debts.
Admitted retaliating against a rival family Nicholas falsely blamed for his parents’ deaths.
“Did Nicholas force you?” the prosecutor asked.
“No.”
“Did he deceive you?”
“Yes.”
“Does deception excuse your choices?”
“No.”
The courtroom became silent.
Dante’s attorney had advised narrower answers.
Dante ignored the advice.
He identified properties used for illegal operations.
Named officials who accepted bribes.
Explained how Nicholas moved money through Vale-linked companies.
His testimony exposed an entire system.
During cross-examination, Nicholas’s attorney attacked him.
“You are sacrificing your godfather to save yourself.”
“I am testifying under an agreement that allows prosecutors to charge me.”
“You suddenly discovered morality after finding a sister?”
“I discovered the cost of pretending family loyalty erases crimes.”
The attorney pointed toward Elena.
“She controls you now?”
Dante looked at her.
“No.”
“Then why change?”
“Because she refused to let me call revenge justice.”
Nicholas watched without emotion.
Then prosecutors played Rosa’s records, Sofia’s audit and the altered estate orders.
The mechanic who modified the gates testified.
The retired officer who hid Elena’s file admitted receiving Richard’s payment.
The evidence closed around Nicholas.
He was convicted on every major count.
The judge later imposed a life sentence.
Dante faced separate consequences.
He surrendered illegal businesses and paid substantial penalties.
Several legitimate Moretti companies entered federal oversight.
He received a reduced sentence involving limited confinement because his cooperation dismantled the larger network.
Some called the deal too generous.
Dante did not argue.
He issued a public statement accepting responsibility without mentioning Elena.
She had asked not to become his excuse.
Before beginning confinement, he met her beside the old Moretti fountain.
The estate had been empty for years.
Dante touched the stone bench where they once hid.
“I searched everywhere except the people closest to me.”
“You were a child when it began.”
“I wasn’t a child forever.”
Elena nodded.
Accountability did not require cruelty.
It required accuracy.
Dante handed her the estate keys.
“It belongs to both of us.”
