Chapter 18 - The Table Victoria Lost

Three years after the assault, Aurelian invited Elena to its employee-ownership celebration.

Vale Crest workers now controlled twenty-five percent of the company through a protected trust.

Luis had become regional benefits director.

The former floor manager oversaw safety compliance.

Elena entered through the main doors.

Not the service elevator.

She wore a deep red suit.

The color belonged to her again.

The VIP table remained near the skyline windows.

Victoria once sat there believing everyone in uniform existed beneath her.

The table now carried name cards for housekeepers, cooks, servers and maintenance workers who had served the company for more than twenty years.

Elena’s seat was among them.

Dante arrived quietly.

His legal businesses remained under oversight, but they were profitable and transparent.

He no longer traveled with a room full of armed men.

Two licensed security officers remained nearby because threats had not disappeared entirely.

Power had changed form.

During dinner, the restaurant manager brought Elena a small box.

Inside was a repaired section of her old silver locket chain.

The chain had broken when Victoria ripped the uniform.

“We found it beneath the table after the police left,” he said.

Elena touched it.

“Thank you.”

A young waitress approached nervously.

“My table wants me to serve a bottle after closing. The guest says he knows the owner.”

The manager answered before Elena could.

“Then the guest can hear no from the owner too.”

The waitress smiled and walked away.

That ordinary protection mattered more than speeches.

Later, Elena stood near the service station where the emergency button once blinked.

Dante joined her.

“Do you wish the locket had stayed hidden?” he asked.

“Sometimes.”

“You would have avoided everything.”

“No. Victoria would still have assaulted a waitress. Nathan would still have stolen employee money. Nicholas would still be free.”

She looked through the glass at the city.

“The locket changed who people thought I was. The evidence changed what they could deny.”

Dante considered that.

“You saved the family.”

Elena shook her head.

“We stopped protecting the version that needed saving.”

The Moretti name no longer represented a single boss.

Its businesses had boards, audits and worker protections.

Its illegal network was gone.

Some people still feared Dante.

He accepted that trust would take longer than reform documents.

👉 Elena had transformed the table where she was humiliated, but one final choice remained: whether she wanted a permanent role inside the Moretti empire her brother had rebuilt.
