Elena Marquez had worked at Aurelian for seven months.
The restaurant occupied the top floor of Vale Crest Tower, the flagship property of Nathan’s hotel company.
Guests knew her as quiet, efficient and almost impossible to provoke.
The kitchen staff knew something else.
Elena noticed everything.
She remembered which managers removed cash from tip envelopes.
She noticed when invoices listed food that had never entered the kitchen.
She kept copies when employee-benefit deductions appeared on paychecks but disappeared from the retirement portal.
Her attention made supervisors uncomfortable.
