Chapter 6 - The Nursery Floorboard

Police obtained Claire’s consent to search her home.

An officer accompanied Alex upstairs.

The nursery door was painted pale green.

Inside stood a white crib, unopened baby gifts, and a rocking chair.

The room looked peaceful.

The floorboard beneath the rocking chair lifted easily.

Inside was a waterproof blue folder.

Alex opened it carefully.

The first page contained emergency instructions.

If this folder is found because I sent the word CLOSE, Victor has become physically dangerous.

Do not allow him or his family to access my phone, the home security system, or the basement computer.

Call Detective Melissa Ward in Fairfax County.

Alex read the name twice.

Claire had already contacted a detective.

Inside were photographs of bruises across three years.

Screenshots of threats.

Copies of loan applications bearing Claire’s forged signature.

Bank statements showing transfers to accounts controlled by Helena and Raúl.

A printed message from Nora:

You should stop fighting him. Pregnancy makes women irrational.

Then Alex found a flash drive labeled BASEMENT.

The officer inserted it into an evidence laptop.

The first video showed Victor standing in a small room downstairs.

Claire sat in a chair.

She was not pregnant then.

Victor held her phone.

“You will call your brother and cancel dinner.”

Claire asked why.

“Because Alex asks too many questions.”

Victor made her repeat a sentence.

I’m tired. We’ll see you another time.

When Claire hesitated, Helena’s voice came from outside the frame.

“Do not make this harder.”

The next clip showed Raúl installing a lock on the basement door.

He claimed it was for storing wine.

But Victor later used the room to keep Claire isolated during arguments.

Not for days.

Sometimes for hours.

Long enough to take her phone, force apologies, and frighten her into compliance.

Alex closed his eyes.

He remembered dozens of canceled visits.

Every time, Claire sounded strangely flat.

He had accepted her explanation because pushing harder seemed disrespectful.

Now he understood those calls had been made under surveillance.

The officer continued reviewing.

A final video showed Claire secretly approaching the basement camera two months earlier.

She whispered directly into it.

“If anyone finds this, Victor does not lose control. He chooses when to use it.”

Alex looked toward the hallway.

Downstairs, Victor was still claiming the morning had been an isolated misunderstanding.

The evidence proved it was a system.
