Chapter 17 - Nora Tells the Truth
Nora eventually agreed to testify.
She admitted the family had mocked Claire for years.
Victor described her as lazy.
Helena called her manipulative.
Raúl stayed silent.
Nora wanted their approval.
So she filmed Claire’s worst moments.
“I thought if everyone laughed, then it meant what we were doing wasn’t serious.”
The prosecutor asked about the livestream.
“Why did you record the kitchen confrontation?”
“I thought Claire would cry and Victor would make her sign.”
“You knew he was coercing her?”
Nora hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Did you expect the wooden stick?”
“No.”
“When he raised it, why did you continue filming?”
Nora looked toward Claire.
“I froze.”
Claire’s attorney played the video.
Nora’s face appeared reflected in the refrigerator.
She was smiling during the first seconds.
The smile disappeared only when the security panel sounded.
“You were not frozen,” the prosecutor said. “You were entertained until consequences appeared.”
Nora began crying.
“Yes.”
That answer mattered more than another excuse.
She testified about the edited videos, the family group chats, and Helena’s custody plan.
She also revealed Victor had assaulted Claire once before while Nora stood outside the bedroom.
“I heard something hit the wall.”
“Did you check on her?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Victor said married people needed privacy.”
The phrase had protected violence for years.
Privacy.
Family business.
Stress.
Pregnancy.
Misunderstanding.
Each word moved responsibility away from the person causing harm.
Nora received probation, community service, and a suspended sentence because she cooperated early and had not participated in the financial fraud.
Her online career ended.
She later entered a restorative-justice program.
Claire did not attend.
Nora asked Alex whether Claire might someday speak to her.
Alex answered, “Your growth cannot depend on access to the person you harmed.”
Nora finally understood that remorse did not create entitlement.
