Chapter 3 - The Breakfast Punishment

The confrontation had begun twenty minutes earlier.
Claire woke at 4:38 a.m. to Victor standing beside the bed.
“Mother wants breakfast at five.”
Claire had been vomiting for two days.
Her doctor had ordered rest.
Victor knew.
He pulled the blanket away anyway.
“She is leaving early. Get up.”
Claire whispered that she felt dizzy.
Victor leaned close.
“You embarrassed me yesterday.”
At dinner, Claire had refused to sign a home-equity document.
Victor claimed it would fund renovations.
She discovered it was actually a loan against the house.
The loan proceeds would go to a company account controlled by him and Raúl.
Claire said she wanted an attorney to review it.
Helena called her ungrateful.
Victor waited until they were alone.
Then he told her she would sign before morning.
Claire still refused.
At 5:00 a.m., she stood in the kitchen cracking eggs while her hands trembled.
Helena criticized the coffee.
Nora laughed at Claire’s swollen feet.
Raúl read financial news as if nothing were happening.
Victor placed the documents on the island.
“Sign.”
Claire shook her head.
Victor picked up the wooden stick.
It normally rested beside the back door for securing a loose window latch.
He struck the countertop once.
Claire flinched.
Nora immediately started recording.
She expected a funny video of the “dramatic pregnant wife” Victor often complained about.
Claire tried to leave.
Victor blocked her.
When she reached for the refrigerator to steady herself, he pushed the door wide and forced her toward the cold floor.
Then he raised the stick.
Nora kept filming.
Helena kept eating.
Raúl kept looking away.
That was what Alex saw on the live feed as he drove the final mile.
Not one cruel man losing control.
An entire family behaving as though Claire’s terror was routine.
Now, inside the kitchen, Alex looked from one face to another.
“How long has this been happening?”
Claire tried to answer.
Victor interrupted.
“She is confused.”
Alex’s gaze sharpened.
“I didn’t ask you.”
Claire took one breath.
Then another.
“Since before the wedding.”
Victor’s head turned toward her.
The admission shocked him more than Alex’s arrival.
Claire had never said it aloud in front of his family.
Helena whispered, “You ungrateful liar.”
Alex stepped farther into the kitchen.
May you like
“You will not speak to her again.”
For the first time that morning, Helena obeyed someone.
