Chapter 11 - The Protection Ledger
Helena’s safe contained more than the ledger.
Inside were copies of Claire’s medical records.
A duplicate key to the house.
Photographs of Claire entering Detective Ward’s office.
And a draft custody petition naming Helena as temporary guardian of the unborn baby.
The petition claimed Claire suffered from prenatal psychosis.
No doctor had made that diagnosis.
Helena intended to file immediately after the birth.
Victor would tell the court Claire was unstable.
Raúl would confirm it.
Nora would provide edited videos showing Claire crying, shouting, or refusing instructions.
The family had been recording her for months.
Not to preserve truth.
To manufacture a version of her that looked dangerous.
Nora’s phone contained dozens of clips.
Some began only after Victor provoked Claire.
Others removed his threats.
One showed Claire pushing a bedroom door closed while crying.
The original recording revealed Victor trying to force his way inside.
The edited version began after Claire shoved the door.
Helena labeled it violent episode.
Detective Ward understood the plan.
Victor wanted the house loan.
Helena wanted the baby.
Raúl wanted his debts erased.
Nora wanted content and family approval.
Each person benefited from Claire appearing unstable.
The pregnancy made the timing urgent.
Once the baby was born, they planned to isolate Claire completely.
At the hospital, Ward explained what police found.
Claire’s face went pale.
“They were going to take her.”
Alex looked toward the monitor.
“They won’t.”
Claire asked whether the custody petition could still be filed.
“It can be filed,” Ward said. “It will not survive the evidence.”
The duplicate house key was seized.
The security codes were changed.
A judge issued an emergency protective order covering Victor, Helena, Raúl, and Nora.
None could contact Claire.
None could enter the house.
None could approach the hospital.
Helena violated the order within six hours.
She called from an unknown number.
Claire did not answer.
The voicemail said:
You are tearing a child away from her family before she is even born.
Ward preserved the message.
Helena still spoke as though the baby belonged to the Washington family first.
Claire was merely the body carrying her.
For the first time, Claire saw the entire pattern.
