Chapter 2 - The Brother Victor Feared

Alex entered only far enough to block the doorway.
He did not rush toward Victor.
That frightened Victor more.
Alex had served eight years in the Marines.
But he had never used his military history to threaten anyone.
He worked in private security now, training hospitals and community organizations to respond to emergencies.
He understood that angry movement could make a dangerous person unpredictable.
So he remained still.
“Put the stick down.”
Victor shifted it behind his leg.
“This is a family misunderstanding.”
Alex glanced at Claire.
She was still on the floor.
One hand protected her belly.
The other pressed against the hardwood as she struggled to remain conscious.
“That does not look misunderstood.”
Helena moved closer.
“You cannot enter our home without permission.”
Alex looked toward the open front door.
“Claire entered my temporary security code seventeen minutes ago.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“What code?”
Claire had installed it weeks earlier.
A silent emergency setting connected to Alex’s phone and the home security account.
One message sent the alert.
A second trigger activated connected camera sharing.
Victor believed he had destroyed her only phone.
He had not known the message automatically opened the household security network.
Nora’s livestream had been detected because her phone was connected to the family Wi-Fi.
Alex’s system copied it before she could stop recording.
Nora stared at her screen.
“You hacked me.”
“No,” Alex said. “You broadcast from a network Claire legally shares.”
Victor stepped between Alex and Claire.
“You are not taking my wife anywhere.”
Claire’s breathing changed.
Alex saw it.
He also saw Victor moving the stick forward again.
“Victor,” Alex said quietly, “put it on the floor.”
Raúl finally spoke.
“Maybe we should all calm down.”
Alex looked at him.
“You watched this happen.”
Raúl said nothing.
Helena tried to seize control.
“Claire fell while making breakfast. Victor was trying to help her stand.”
Alex raised the phone.
The frozen livestream image showed the stick descending beside Claire’s body.
Helena’s mouth closed.
Victor glanced toward the driveway.
He was calculating whether neighbors had noticed Alex’s arrival.
Whether police had been called.
Whether he still had time to control the story.
Alex knew that expression.
It was the same expression Victor wore three years earlier when Claire appeared at Thanksgiving with a bruise and claimed she had walked into a cabinet.
Alex had not believed her then.
But Claire had begged him not to intervene.
Now she had finally sent the message they agreed would mean only one thing.
Come immediately.
