Chapter 20 - Claire Takes the Stand
Claire entered the courtroom slowly.
Victor watched her belly before looking at her face.
That small movement told her he still saw the baby as the most important thing she carried.
The prosecutor began gently.
“Why did you send the message?”
“Because Victor raised the wooden stick.”
“Had he threatened you before?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you not leave sooner?”
The defense objected.
The judge allowed Claire to answer only if she wished.
She did.
“Because leaving was not one decision. It was money, housing, evidence, medical care, custody, and the fear that the person controlling you becomes most dangerous when control ends.”
The jury listened.
Claire described the basement room.
The canceled visits.
The forged documents.
The way Victor alternated apologies with threats.
Then the prosecutor asked about the phrase CLOSE.
“It was the emergency word Alex and I agreed on.”
“Why that word?”
“Because I needed him close without calling and giving Victor time to prepare.”
Victor’s attorney stood for cross-examination.
“You remained married to Victor for six years?”
“Yes.”
“You continued sharing meals, holidays, and photographs?”
“Yes.”
“You told friends you loved him?”
“Yes.”
“So your relationship was not always abusive.”
Claire paused.
“Good moments do not cancel dangerous ones.”
“You controlled the house deed without his knowledge.”
“The house was mine before marriage.”
“You hid financial information.”
“I protected an asset after he forged documents.”
“You secretly recorded him.”
“Because he denied events after they happened.”
The attorney moved closer.
“Did your brother dislike Victor?”
“Eventually.”
“Did Alex want the marriage to end?”
“Alex wanted me alive.”
The courtroom became silent.
The attorney returned to his table.
Victor looked at Claire as though she had betrayed something private.
