Chapter 4 - The Rule About Police

Alex had already called emergency services from his truck.
He did not tell Victor.
Claire’s safety plan required him to arrive first if he was nearby, then keep the situation stable until trained responders came.
Victor heard distant sirens and realized.
“You called the police?”
Alex did not answer.
Victor’s confidence cracked.
He dropped the wooden stick onto the floor.
Helena immediately moved toward it.
Alex stopped her with one sentence.
“Leave it exactly where it is.”
She froze.
Nora slipped her phone into her pocket.
Alex raised his own device.
“The stream is still being preserved.”
“I want my lawyer,” Nora said.
“You may need one.”
Raúl stood slowly.
“This has gone too far.”
Claire looked at him from the floor.
“You watched him raise it.”
Raúl’s face tightened.
“I thought he was frightening you. I did not think he would hit you.”
“He already had.”
The room went silent.
Victor stared at Claire.
That was the second secret she had spoken aloud.
Alex’s jaw tightened.
“When?”
Claire looked toward Victor.
“Three weeks ago.”
Victor stepped forward.
“She slipped in the bathroom.”
Alex shifted between them.
“No more.”
Victor looked toward the back door.
Alex noticed.
“Do not run.”
“This is my house.”
Claire whispered, “No, it isn’t.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Victor laughed once.
“What?”
Claire swallowed through the pain.
“The deed is in my name.”
Helena stared at her.
Victor had repeatedly told his parents that he bought the house.
In truth, Claire inherited money from her late grandmother and purchased it before the marriage.
Victor convinced her to let him manage the bills.
He then presented the home as proof of his success.
The home-equity document from the previous evening would have given him access to the only major asset he did not legally control.
That was why refusal triggered violence.
The sirens grew louder.
Victor looked at Alex.
Then Claire.
Then the shattered phone beneath the framed photograph.
He had believed destroying the device destroyed the evidence.
Instead, Nora’s recording, the security alert, and Alex’s preserved feed had documented everything.
The front door remained open.
Cold blue-gray light entered the hallway.
May you like
Police vehicles turned into the driveway.
Victor finally understood that he was no longer deciding who heard Claire’s story.
