Chapter 13 - The Money Behind the Stick

Financial investigators uncovered the immediate trigger.

Victor’s real-estate company was collapsing.

He borrowed heavily to purchase land for a luxury development.

The project failed environmental review.

Investors demanded repayment.

Raúl had guaranteed part of the debt.

Helena moved family savings into the company.

Victor concealed the losses.

He needed two million dollars within seventy-two hours.

Claire’s house was worth nearly three million.

The home-equity loan would cover the immediate demands.

He forged preliminary documents but needed Claire’s final electronic authorization.

She discovered the fraud when the lender called to verify her employment.

Victor told her it was a misunderstanding.

Then demanded she sign anyway.

Claire refused.

At 5:00 a.m., the deadline was approaching.

The breakfast was staged.

Helena and Raúl came to pressure her.

Nora recorded in case Claire reacted emotionally.

Victor intended to frighten her into signing.

The wooden stick was not planned as a murder weapon.

It was a tool of intimidation.

That distinction did not make the act safer.

It made it more deliberate.

Victor knew exactly how much fear he believed he needed.

The lender’s emails revealed another fact.

If Claire died before signing, Victor could not automatically borrow against the home.

But if a court declared her incapacitated, he could seek control as spouse and guardian.

That explained the false psychiatric file.

Violence and financial coercion were two parts of the same plan.

Victor’s attorney withdrew after discovering forged documents had been submitted under his firm’s name.

A new attorney advised Victor to negotiate.

Victor refused.

He believed Claire would eventually retract her statement.

“She always comes back,” he said during a recorded jail call.

Detective Ward played the call for Claire.

She did not react visibly.

But that night, she asked Alex to remain beside the hospital-room door.

Victor’s certainty disturbed her.

Not because she intended to return.

Because he still believed her decisions were temporary until he approved them.

The law had restrained him.

His mind had not changed.
