Chapter 15 - Helena’s Version of Motherhood
Helena violated the protection order a second time.
She appeared outside the prenatal clinic holding flowers.
Police arrested her in the parking lot.
She insisted she only wanted to apologize.
The card attached to the flowers told another story.
Come home before outsiders destroy what remains.
Claire read it once.
Then gave it to Detective Ward.
Helena’s attorney arranged a recorded interview.
She portrayed herself as a mother trying to preserve family unity.
Ward asked why she financed a false psychiatric report.
“To protect the baby.”
“From what?”
“Claire’s instability.”
“What licensed professional diagnosed her?”
“Anyone could see it.”
“Because she cried?”
“She was secretive.”
“Because she protected financial records?”
“She distrusted her husband.”
“Her husband forged her signature.”
Helena’s expression tightened.
Ward asked about the basement.
“It was a quiet room.”
“With an exterior lock?”
“Victor made mistakes.”
“You helped.”
“I was supporting my son.”
“Did supporting him require ignoring Claire?”
Helena looked offended.
“She was not my child.”
The sentence revealed everything.
Helena’s morality ended at biological loyalty.
She believed a mother’s duty to her son justified harm to anyone outside the bond.
Ward asked whether she would have behaved differently if Victor raised the stick near Nora.
Helena answered immediately.
“Of course.”
Then she realized what she had admitted.
Claire’s pregnancy did not humanize her in Helena’s eyes.
It increased the value of the unborn child while making Claire easier to portray as unstable.
Helena accepted a plea agreement for conspiracy, coercion, and violation of the protection order.
She avoided a lengthy prison sentence but received eighteen months in county custody and five years of supervised release.
At sentencing, she looked toward Claire.
“I hope someday you understand what a mother will do for her child.”
Claire stood carefully.
“I do.”
