Chapter 4 - The Signature Comparison

The hospital clerk clicked her mouse button three times.

A loud mechanical humming sound came from the printer.

The white paper feed pulled a blank sheet in.

Black ink sprayed across the paper surface in lines.

Close-up on the desk: The clerk printed document out.

She picked up the warm paper from output tray.

She grabbed Michael's folded paper from the glass counter.

She laid both legal documents side by side together.

Her brow furrowed into a deep, suspicious frown line.

She carefully compared the two signatures on bottom lines.

I leaned forward on the stretcher, watching her eyes.

Michael's arrogant confidence began to visibly crack down.

He shifted his weight nervously from foot to foot.

His hands twitched inside his navy polo shirt pockets.

David stepped up beside his son, breathing very heavily.

"Is there a problem with the paperwork, miss?" David.

His voice lacked its previous booming, tyrannical power now.

The clerk looked up from papers directly at Michael.

"The signature on your form does not match at all."

"The signature on her official chart is completely different."

"Furthermore, her chart contains an explicit legal refusal notice."

"Mrs. Vance explicitly barred her husband from medical decisions."

Gasps echoed from several waiting room patients watching us.

Michael's face went from angry red to pale white.

"That refusal notice is outdated!" Michael lied frantically.

"She signed my power of attorney document last night!"

"She signed it in front of three independent witnesses!"

"I signed nothing!" I yelled, my voice breaking tears.

"You held me down in the kitchen last night!"

"You tried to force my hand onto that paper!"

"David held my arms while you grabbed my wrist!"

The entire hospital lobby fell into a dead silence.

The security officer turned his head slowly toward Michael.

His hand unclipped the safety strap on his holster.

"Is that true, ma'am?" the security officer asked.

"They used physical force to obtain a fake signature?"

I lifted my left arm, showing my red wrist.

Deep purple bruises were already forming on my skin.

"Look at my arm!" I sobbed out loud.

"They bruised me when I fought them off last!"

David backed away three steps toward the street exit.
