Chapter 2 - The Registration Counter

The paramedics decisively lifted me back onto the stretcher.
They stabilized my shaking shoulders with warm white blankets.
They rolled my stretcher swiftly through the sliding doors.
The cool air-conditioned air of the lobby hit face.
My husband Michael strode past us toward front desk.
His polished leather shoes clicked loudly on clean floors.
He approached the female hospital clerk behind glass barrier.
Michael slammed his palm onto the polished laminate counter.
"I'm her medical decision-maker," Michael announced arrogantly.
His commanding voice carried across the busy reception room.
He pulled a folded paper from his polo pocket.
"My wife is mentally unfit to make decisions today."
"I am taking full legal control of her care."
Hearing those outrageous lies ignited a fire inside me.
I forced myself upright on the rolling medical stretcher.
The female nurse tried to keep me lying flat.
"Lie down, Emily, you need to rest," nurse whispered.
I ignored her advice and sat up completely straight.
I pointed my trembling hand directly at Michael's face.
My fingers shook wildly, but my gaze remained lethal.
"I never signed anything!" I shrieked across room.
"He is lying to you! Do not trust him!"
Every patient in the waiting area turned to look.
The female hospital clerk paused, her hands hovering keyboard.
She looked from Michael's cold face to my tears.
She saw my gray T-shirt stretched over belly.
She noticed the dark red grip marks on arm.
Michael glared at me with pure, venomous control tactics.
"Be quiet, Emily, you are having a breakdown," Michael.
He leaned over the counter toward the hospital clerk.
"She has been experiencing severe paranoid delusions all morning."
"Her doctor ordered an immediate involuntary psychiatric hold today."
"I have the signed court papers right here now."
David walked into the lobby behind Michael, panting.
He smoothed his blue plaid shirt with shaking hands.
"It is true, Officer," David spoke to security.
"My daughter-in-law is a danger to her child."
My breath hitched in my throat as panic surged.
They had spent weeks preparing this elaborate legal trap.
They wanted to strip away my fundamental parental rights.
They wanted to take my unborn child away forever.
I looked at the hospital clerk with desperate eyes.
"Check my official electronic chart on your computer system!"
