Chapter 3 - The Electronic Record

The female hospital clerk rapidly opened my electronic file.
Her long fingers typed my Social Security number fast.
The blue computer monitor light reflected off her glasses.
Michael took one forceful, aggressive step toward her counter.
He reached his hand over the tall glass partition.
He tried to grab the computer keyboard from clerk.
"You don't need to check her online files!" Michael.
"I have the physical hard copy right here now!"
A tall hospital security officer stepped in between them.
The officer placed an outstretched arm against Michael's chest.
The heavy leather of his uniform vest creaked loudly.
"Step back from the desk, sir," security officer commanded.
"Let the registration clerk do her job in peace."
Michael's jaw tightened into a rigid, dangerous line.
Sweat began glistening across his pale upper lip area.
David took a step back toward the automatic doors.
His confident, domineering demeanor was beginning to falter slightly.
I watched every micro-expression on my husband's face.
I knew Michael better than anyone else in world.
When he lost control, he always became incredibly violent.
He could not tolerate anyone questioning his supreme authority.
The clerk scanned through my digital medical history profile.
Her eyes moved back and forth across the screen.
"Mrs. Emily Vance," the clerk read aloud carefully.
"Your primary obstetrician is Doctor Sarah Jenkins, correct?"
"Yes! Doctor Jenkins at City Women's Clinic!" I.
"Doctor Jenkins told me never to sign power attorney!"
Michael's face flushed a dark, angry crimson shade.
"Doctor Jenkins is not aware of her mental state!"
Michael shouted out, pointing his finger at the clerk.
"I am her legal husband under state marriage law!"
"My authority supersedes her doctor's opinions every time!"
The security officer pressed his hand onto his holster.
"Sir, lower your voice inside this hospital building."
The paramedic kept his hand resting on my shoulder.
"Her blood pressure is rising dangerously high," paramedic reported.
"We need to get her into a room now."
The clerk looked up from her computer screen frowning.
"Hold on one second," the clerk stated firmly.
"There is a legal document flagged on her account."
"A document uploaded by her physician two days ago."
