Chapter 23 - The Verdict Against Dylan
The jury found Dylan guilty on every major count.
At sentencing, the judge described the scheme as “an extraordinary abuse of family trust and institutional credibility.”
Dylan received a long federal sentence.
He stood before the court and asked to speak.
“I blamed Anna because she survived something I caused.”
He looked toward me.
“I thought she had a better life because everyone loved her more. The truth is she built one while I spent years running from what I did.”
He apologized to Nora.
To Emma.
To the foundation’s families.
To me.
The apology did not undo anything.
But it contained no excuse.
That mattered slightly.
The judge imposed the sentence.
A court officer closed the handcuffs.
Dylan flinched at the metallic snap.
Our eyes met.
I remembered the custody door closing behind me.
This time, I felt no triumph.
Only finality.
We were not even.
Pain does not balance pain.
Prison does not return Caleb.
His conviction did not return Nora’s pregnancy.
