Chapter 20 - Dylan’s Last Escape

Canadian authorities traced Dylan to a marina near Vancouver.

He had altered his hair and carried a passport under Daniel Rowe.

Agents approached as he prepared to board a private sailboat.

Dylan ran.

He crossed the dock, pushed past an employee, and jumped onto another vessel.

No dramatic chase ended in gunfire.

A wet rope caught his ankle.

He fell hard against the deck and was arrested before he could stand.

The photograph showed him seated in handcuffs, staring at the water.

For the first time, he wore the same orange uniform I had worn.

Extradition took months.

He fought every step.

He claimed our parents manipulated him after Caleb’s death.

He claimed Nora framed him to reduce her sentence.

He claimed I pursued revenge.

Then prosecutors played our phone call.

“You sent me to prison.”

“You sent yourself there when you wouldn’t leave things alone.”

His own voice eliminated ambiguity.

Dylan was returned to Phoenix.

At his arraignment, he looked toward the gallery.

I sat beside Lena and Marisol.

No parents defended him.

No Nora waited behind him.

No satisfied smile remained.

He mouthed one word.

May you like

Sorry.

I did not respond.
