Chapter 18 - My Father’s Confession

My father accepted a plea agreement first.

He was sixty-three and feared dying in prison.

He admitted bribing Walter after the crash.

He admitted replacing toxicology documents.

He admitted deleting files from my phone.

He admitted moving Nora after the fall.

He claimed my mother and Dylan controlled the rest.

I met him once with attorneys present.

He looked smaller without his folded arms.

“Why?” I asked.

“I thought I was saving my son.”

“And me?”

“You were stronger.”

The answer stunned me.

“You believed I could survive prison?”

“I believed the truth would eventually come out.”

“You testified against me.”

“Your mother said it was the only way to keep Dylan from running.”

“You knew I was innocent.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

The room disappeared for a moment.

Not because I learned anything new.

Because he finally said it plainly.

“You watched them handcuff me.”

“Yes.”

“You heard the sentence.”

“Yes.”

“And you went home.”

He began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

“You are sorry because the plan failed.”

“No.”

“Would you have confessed if the video stayed hidden?”

He could not answer.

That was the truth.

My father accepted seven years for obstruction, financial fraud, evidence tampering, and conspiracy.

He provided the location of one of Dylan’s emergency accounts.

The account had recently been accessed in Canada.

Investigators moved north.
