Chapter 15 - No Home to Return To

Freedom did not restore my former life.
My apartment had been sold to pay legal fees.
My license as a financial officer remained suspended.
Old friends avoided me.
Some apologized.
Others said they had always suspected I was innocent.
I believed very few of them.
Marisol met me outside the courthouse after being released on parole.
She handed me a coffee.
“You look disappointed.”
“I thought freedom would feel louder.”
“It feels like standing in a room after the alarm stops.”
I stayed with Lena temporarily.
At night, I woke expecting prison doors to close.
I ate too quickly.
I counted footsteps.
I slept with the lights on.
Exoneration removed the conviction.
It did not remove prison from my body.
Nora offered me her condo.
I refused.
She wanted to help.
She also wanted relief from guilt.
I could not provide that yet.
Emma wrote me a letter.
I am sorry the adults were scared. I hope you are not scared forever.
I kept it.
Federal prosecutors charged Nora with perjury and conspiracy.
Her cooperation reduced the penalty.
She accepted a short sentence and probation.
Before reporting, she asked to meet.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” she said.
“Good.”
“What can I do?”
“Tell Emma the truth in age-appropriate words. Don’t make her carry your shame.”
She nodded.
“And Dylan?”
“If they find him, testify.”
May you like
“I will.”
For the first time, I believed her.
