Chapter 12 - The Crash Witness

Lena located the driver blamed for Caleb’s death.

His name was Walter Pierce.

He lived in New Mexico under a different surname.

The official record said his blood-alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.

The original toxicology report showed zero alcohol.

The result had been replaced.

Walter admitted my father paid him two hundred thousand dollars.

He had been driving on a suspended license and feared prison for causing the collision.

My father’s attorney offered him a choice.

Accept responsibility for an accident the evidence might blame on him anyway.

Or face charges without legal support.

Walter took the money.

He moved away.

He spent fifteen years drinking because he believed he helped bury the truth about a dead teenager.

His dash camera had captured the crash.

Police seized it.

The footage disappeared from evidence.

Walter secretly kept a copy.

He gave it to Lena.

The video showed Dylan racing another vehicle on a dark desert road.

Caleb leaned forward from the passenger seat, gesturing for him to slow down.

Dylan crossed the center line while passing.

Walter swerved.

Dylan overcorrected.

The car struck a barrier and rolled.

Walter’s vehicle clipped the rear quarter panel, but he did not cause the initial loss of control.

Caleb died before paramedics arrived.

Dylan survived with minor injuries.

My parents arrived at the hospital before police finished interviews.

By morning, the story had changed.

The footage did not prove intentional murder.

It proved reckless driving and a massive cover-up.

The statute of limitations complicated criminal charges against Dylan for the crash.

But obstruction, evidence tampering, bribery, and perjury remained possible.

More importantly, the truth explained his motive.
