Chapter 2 - The Fall on the Stairs

Nora lost her baby at fourteen weeks.
The miscarriage happened during my parents’ anniversary dinner.
Twenty relatives were gathered at their Phoenix home.
Nora and I had argued near the staircase ten minutes earlier.
That much was true.
She accused me of trying to destroy Dylan’s career.
I told her Dylan was destroying it himself.
Then she walked away.
Minutes later, someone screamed.
I found Nora at the bottom of the stairs, curled around her stomach.
Dylan was kneeling beside her.
My mother pointed at me.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
Nora looked up through tears.
“She pushed me.”
The room changed instantly.
No one asked how.
No one asked whether anyone had seen it.
My father took my phone.
Dylan blocked the front door.
My mother called an ambulance and told the dispatcher her daughter had attacked a pregnant woman.
By the time police arrived, the story had already been built.
Nora said I grabbed her arm and shoved her from behind.
Dylan said he heard me threaten her.
My mother claimed she saw my hand on Nora’s shoulder.
My father said I had been “unstable for months.”
Three relatives remembered hearing the argument.
No one saw the fall.
That did not matter.
Nora suffered bruising and lost the pregnancy the next morning.
The prosecutor framed the case as jealousy.
I was thirty-one, unmarried, and had recently learned I could not safely carry a pregnancy because of a heart condition.
Nora was pregnant.
According to the state, I resented her.
My own family repeated that story under oath.
The jury believed them.
What they never heard was why Nora and I argued.

I had discovered Dylan was stealing from the nonprofit where we both worked.
And Nora had begged me to stay quiet.
