Chapter 28 - The Kitchen Dinner
Three years after the coffee attack, Lena hosted a family dinner.
Rachel sat near the windows.
Noah cooked at the wooden island.
Several women from the financial-safety workshop joined them.
One guest accidentally placed a household card beside her plate.
The image made Lena remember Diane’s hand near the card.
Her chest tightened briefly.
Then Noah asked quietly:
“Need a minute?”
Lena nodded.
They stepped outside.
Noah did not touch her until she reached for his hand.
After a few breaths, Lena returned to the kitchen.
She picked up her coffee.
Warm, not hot.
She raised the mug.
“To knowing what belongs to us.”
Rachel smiled.
“And knowing what doesn’t.”
They laughed.
The kitchen that once held humiliation now held people who understood boundaries.
