Chapter 23 - Kara’s Testimony
Kara requested a private meeting after Eric’s conviction.
Lena almost declined.
Then she agreed with Rachel present.
Kara entered carrying a small box.
Inside were jewelry and gifts Eric purchased with Lena’s money.
“I returned most of it through investigators,” Kara said. “These were overlooked.”
Lena did not touch the box.
“Why did you come?”
“To apologize.”
“You knew he was married.”
“Yes.”
“You believed he was leaving.”
“Yes.”
“That does not make you innocent.”
“I know.”
Kara explained that Eric described Lena as controlling and cruel.
He claimed Diane lived with them because Lena refused to let him help his mother financially.
The truth was the opposite.
Lena had supported Diane while Eric built a second life.
Kara looked down.
“I believed the version that made me feel chosen.”
Lena recognized the pattern.
Diane believed the version that made her feel entitled.
Kara believed the version that made her feel special.
Eric gave everyone a story that rewarded silence.
Lena accepted the returned items.
She did not offer friendship.
But she said:
“Thank you for testifying.”
