Chapter 14 - Diane Turned on Eric
Diane learned about Kara from her attorney.
Her rage was immediate.
Not because Eric betrayed Lena.
Because he planned a future that did not include his mother.
Diane called prosecutors and offered cooperation.
She provided messages, account passwords, and recordings of conversations with Eric.
In one recording, Eric explained the refinancing plan.
Diane asked:
“What if Lena refuses to sign?”
Eric replied:
“She won’t know she signed.”
Another recording captured Diane’s concern about the household card.
“Forty thousand is too much. She’ll notice.”
Eric answered:
“Then make her feel guilty for questioning you.”
The recordings implicated both of them.
Diane expected immunity.
Prosecutors offered no such promise.
“You threw the coffee,” the prosecutor reminded her. “You participated in the financial scheme.”
Diane claimed Eric manipulated her.
The prosecutor showed her own text:
I’ll make sure she understands whose family runs that house.
Diane lowered her eyes.
For the first time, she faced a problem she could not blame entirely on someone else.
Her cooperation might reduce her sentence.
It could not erase her choices.
Lena heard about the meeting from Rachel.
“Do you want to know what Diane said about you?” Rachel asked.
“No.”
“You’re sure?”
“She has had years to tell me who she thinks I am.”
