Chapter 18 - Sentencing Day
Diane accepted a plea agreement on the remaining financial charges.
She received eighteen months in county custody, followed by supervised probation and full restitution obligations.
Eric received seven years in state prison, plus a suspended sentence tied to repayment and future fraud restrictions.
The judge addressed him directly.
“You did not make one desperate mistake. You created a sequence of lies designed to remove your wife’s control over her money and home.”
Then the judge turned to Diane.
“You treated another woman’s labor as a family resource you were entitled to claim.”
Diane cried.
Lena watched without satisfaction.
During victim statements, Lena spoke for less than three minutes.
“The coffee caused temporary pain. The financial betrayal caused deeper damage. But the worst part was realizing that my husband saw my safety as less important than protecting the lie.”
Eric lowered his head.
Lena continued.
“I am not asking the court to avenge me. I am asking it to recognize that financial control is not less serious because the victim has a job or a house.”
The judge thanked her.
After sentencing, reporters asked whether Lena felt justice had been served.
She answered:
“Consequences have begun.”
Then she left with Rachel.
Justice was not a single verdict.
It was recovering money.
