Chapter 10 - The First Night Alone

That evening, Lena sat alone in the kitchen.
The broken mug was gone.
The coffee stain had been cleaned from the tile.
Yet she could still see the attack whenever she looked toward the breakfast bar.
Her purse and keys rested near the entrance.
The cream folder sat in front of her.
For years, the house represented security.
Now it contained memories of betrayal.
Rachel asked whether Lena wanted to sell it.
“I don’t know.”
“You do not have to decide now.”
Lena opened the folder.
Inside was a letter from her grandmother, written when the trust was created.
This house is not meant to trap you. It is meant to ensure that no one can force you to stay where you are not respected.
Lena read the words twice.
Her grandmother had understood something Lena learned too late.
Property protection was not greed.
It was choice.
At midnight, Lena received a bank alert.
Another attempt had been made to access her account.
The login came from Eric’s old tablet.
He had not stopped.
Even after the protective order.
Even after police interviews.
He still believed he could reach into Lena’s life and take what he needed.
Rachel advised her to preserve the alert.
Police obtained a warrant for the tablet.
Inside, they found saved passwords, copies of Lena’s identification, trust documents photographed months earlier, and a draft email to a mortgage broker.
One sentence stood out:
My wife is emotionally unstable, so communications should go through me.
Eric had planned to use the same method as Diane.
Discredit Lena.
Then speak for her.

The case was no longer simply about unauthorized spending.
It was about control.
