Chapter 20 - The Letter From Diane
Diane wrote Lena from custody.
The first letter contained excuses.
She was frightened about retirement.
Eric promised repayment.
Lena had always seemed financially secure.
Diane claimed she felt invisible in the house.
Lena returned it unread after the first page.
Months later, another letter arrived.
This one was shorter.
I believed your success meant taking from you caused less harm. I treated your boundaries as disrespect because accepting them would have forced me to admit the house was never mine. I threw the coffee because you said no, and I believed no one had the right to deny me.
Lena read the entire letter.
Diane did not ask for forgiveness.
She included a form surrendering claim to several pieces of furniture and jewelry, allowing them to be sold for restitution.
Lena gave the letter to Rachel.
“Do I need to answer?”
“No.”
“Will silence make me cruel?”
Rachel shook her head.
“A boundary is not cruelty.”
Lena kept the letter in the legal file.
Not as a beginning.
As a record that Diane had finally named what she did.
