Chapter 19 - The House After Them
Lena removed Diane’s furniture from the den.
She donated most of it.
Eric’s belongings were collected by his brother under supervision.
The kitchen remained unchanged for several months.
Lena avoided the breakfast bar.
Then one Saturday, she hired a contractor to replace it.
The old white counter became a wide wooden island.
The sharp corner where Lena had braced herself was removed.
She replaced the tile where the mug shattered.
Not because the floor was damaged.
Because she wanted the room to stop preserving the exact shape of that night.
Rachel helped her choose new lighting.
Warm.
Simple.
No dark den entrance where someone could stand and watch.
When construction ended, Lena hosted dinner for a few friends.
At one point, someone spilled coffee.
The cup tipped accidentally.
Liquid crossed the new island.
Everyone froze because they knew Lena’s history.
Then Lena picked up a towel.
“It’s just coffee,” she said.
Her hands shook slightly.
But she cleaned it.
The moment belonged to her now.
