Chapter 7 - THE FUNERAL DATE THAT CHANGED

Oliver never reached Elena’s office.

The next morning, Marcus received a message from Samantha.

OLIVER HAD A CARDIAC EVENT DURING THE NIGHT. HE PASSED PEACEFULLY AT HOME.

Marcus called immediately.

Samantha answered in tears.

“Where is he?”

“The funeral home.”

“Which hospital pronounced him dead?”

“He didn’t go to a hospital. Dr. Kent came.”

“I want to see him.”

“Family only.”

“I’m his oldest friend.”

“Please respect my grief.”

She ended the call.

Marcus drove to Oliver’s house.

No police vehicles.

No ambulance record.

Only Samantha’s car and a black transport van leaving the driveway.

He called Elena.

She had not been informed.

He called Joyce.

No answer.

Samantha had already sent Joyce an email.

The funeral would be held Saturday at four in the afternoon.

What Samantha did not know was that Joyce rarely checked email.

She learned about Oliver’s death from Marcus late Friday morning.

“The funeral is tomorrow,” Joyce said through tears.

Marcus went silent.

“No. It’s today.”

Joyce looked at the clock.

11:18 a.m.

The funeral had started eighteen minutes earlier.

Samantha had given her the wrong day.

Joyce changed into the first black dress she could find and drove nearly eighty miles.

Marcus headed to Henry’s storage locker.

The brass key opened a metal box.

Inside were financial records, medication photographs, copies of the unsigned power of attorney, and a sealed envelope addressed to Joyce.

There was also a handwritten note.

IF I AM DECLARED DEAD AT HOME, DEMAND AN AUTOPSY.

Marcus called Elena.

“Oliver knew this might happen.”

They raced toward the funeral home.

Inside, Samantha had arranged a short service with no visitation period.

She told guests Oliver had requested immediate cremation.

The coffin was scheduled to close at noon.

Cremation would follow at one.

At 11:54, the funeral director announced that the family should say their final goodbyes.

Samantha moved to close the coffin.

Then the doors opened.

Joyce entered breathless, her hair disordered from the drive.

Samantha stepped directly in front of her.

“You were not invited.”

“He was my son.”

“You abandoned him.”

“You gave me the wrong date.”

“Please leave.”

Joyce looked past her.

Oliver lay beneath the white flowers.

Something inside her refused to believe the stillness.

She pushed Samantha aside.

Six minutes later, her hand was resting on Oliver’s chest.

👉 Samantha changed the funeral date because she needed Oliver cremated before Joyce could demand the autopsy he had warned her to request.
