Chapter 14 - THE HEARING FROM THE HOSPITAL BED
The emergency hearing took place by video.
Samantha appeared from county jail in a plain gray uniform.
Her attorney argued that Joyce had spent years trying to regain control of Carter Medical Logistics.
He described the funeral discovery as a tragic medical error.
He called Samantha a grieving wife who had relied on a licensed physician.
Then Oliver’s hospital camera turned on.
He sat propped against pillows.
Joyce remained outside the frame.
The judge asked whether Oliver understood the hearing.
He nodded.
A speech therapist held the communication board.
“Do you want Samantha Carter making medical decisions for you?”
Oliver pointed to two letters.
N-O.
“Do you want Joyce Carter removed from your room?”
N-O.
“Who do you trust to assist with your medical and financial decisions while you recover?”
Oliver slowly spelled:
M-Y M-O-T-H-E-R.
Samantha stared at the screen.
Her face remained still until Oliver lifted a handwritten page.
It contained one sentence.
SAMANTHA KNEW I WAS ALIVE.
The judge admitted the smartwatch data, the audio recording, and the preliminary toxicology findings.
Samantha’s attorney objected.
The judge denied the request to remove Joyce and suspended every authority Samantha had over Oliver’s medical care, company, insurance, and property.
The forged DNR was declared invalid.
Joyce’s temporary voting power remained in place.
Before the hearing ended, Samantha asked to address Oliver.
The judge allowed one minute.
Samantha looked into the camera.
“You are confused. Your mother is using you.”
Oliver’s hand began shaking.
Joyce nearly entered the frame.
He stopped her with one look.
Then he raised another handwritten message.
YOU PUT ME IN A COFFIN.
Samantha’s composure broke.
“I was told you were dead!”
Oliver pointed toward the recovered audio transcript beside him.
The judge ended the hearing.
Federal prosecutors added charges connected to financial conspiracy and evidence destruction.
Dr. Kent accepted a cooperation agreement.
He admitted signing the false death certificate.
He also admitted giving Oliver the additional dose.
In exchange for consideration at sentencing, Kent agreed to reveal when the poisoning began.
Investigators expected him to name the previous summer.
Instead, he gave a date almost eleven months earlier.
