Chapter 16 - THE MOTHER THEY CALLED CONTROLLING

News of the case spread nationally.
Headlines described Joyce as the mother who found life inside a coffin.
Reporters gathered outside her house.
Strangers sent letters calling her a hero.
Joyce disliked the word.
She did not feel heroic.
She felt angry.
For two years, people around Oliver had accepted Samantha’s description of her.
Difficult.
Possessive.
Unable to let go.
At the company, several board members had dismissed Joyce’s concerns because Samantha called them emotional.
At the funeral home, staff tried to remove her because Samantha said she would create a scene.
Even after Oliver was found breathing, Samantha’s lawyers claimed Joyce was using him.
The same lie survived because it was convenient.
During a company meeting, Joyce addressed every employee.
“I was not always right,” she said. “I argued too hard sometimes. I held onto the company because it was the last thing Henry and I built together.”
She paused.
“But being imperfect did not make Samantha’s lies true.”
The audit revealed that several employees had raised concerns about Northstar.
Samantha fired two.
She demoted another.
Joyce invited them back.
She established an independent reporting system and ordered repayment of stolen retirement contributions.
Lucas agreed to plead guilty after prosecutors showed him the smartwatch audio.
He admitted creating Northstar, forging invoices, and preparing offshore accounts.
He claimed he did not know Samantha planned to kill Oliver.
Evidence showed otherwise.
He had purchased the private charter flight one day before the funeral.
He expected Samantha to join him after the cremation.
Their plan was to blame missing company money on Oliver.
A dead executive with a supposed history of confusion could not defend himself.
Oliver’s life insurance would pay Samantha twelve million dollars.
She had increased the policy only five months earlier.
Joyce sat beside Oliver when Elena explained it.
Oliver looked toward the window.
“She wanted the company, the insurance, and a dead man to blame.”
“Yes,” Elena said.
Oliver’s voice became quiet.
“And I defended her against my mother.”
Joyce reached for his hand.
“You were manipulated.”
“I was also proud.”
“Both can be true.”
He looked at her.
“You don’t have to forgive me because I almost died.”
“I know.”
“I want to earn it.”
Joyce squeezed his fingers.

“Then get well. Tell the truth. And never ask me to ignore what I see again.”
👉 Joyce offered Oliver a path back, but reconciliation would require him to admit publicly that the mother he rejected had been warning him all along.
