Chapter 5 - THE SEVEN MILLION DOLLAR HOLE
Three months before the funeral, Oliver noticed a problem in the company’s emergency supply division.
Carter Medical Logistics delivered surgical equipment, medication storage systems, and disaster supplies to hospitals across six states.
A new vendor called Northstar Distribution had received nearly seven million dollars in eighteen months.
Oliver had never met its executives.
The company had no warehouse.
Its registered office belonged to a mailbox service.
When Oliver questioned Samantha, she barely looked up from her laptop.
“Northstar manages subcontractors.”
“Which subcontractors?”
“I’ll send you the file.”
The file never arrived.
Oliver asked the accounting department.
The new controller told him Samantha had personally approved the payments.
Oliver began searching after hours.
He found invoices with identical wording, altered dates, and approval signatures copied from older contracts.
Several carried his electronic signature.
He had not signed them.
Then his health began deteriorating.
He became dizzy during meetings.
His hands shook.
Twice, he nearly collapsed.
Samantha took him to Dr. Raymond Kent, a private physician who treated wealthy clients outside the hospital system.
Kent diagnosed an irregular heartbeat and severe stress.
He prescribed several medications.
Oliver trusted him because Samantha did.
Instead of improving, Oliver grew weaker.
He stopped driving.
He stopped attending board meetings.
Samantha began handling every decision.
Marcus noticed.
He had worked beside Oliver since college and knew his friend’s habits.
One evening, Marcus entered Oliver’s office and found him gripping the desk for balance.
“You need a hospital.”
“Samantha says Kent is monitoring it.”
“Since when do you let Samantha make every medical decision?”
Oliver looked toward the closed door.
“Since I stopped knowing whether my own mind is working.”
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Oliver opened a drawer.
Inside were printed Northstar invoices.
“I found seven million dollars missing.”
Marcus examined them.
“Does the board know?”
“Not yet.”
“You need a forensic audit.”
“I need proof before Samantha finds out I’m looking.”
Marcus stared at him.
“I think she already knows.”
Oliver removed a small brass key from his pocket.
“If something happens to me, take this to Elena.”
“What does it open?”
“A storage locker under Dad’s name.”
“What’s inside?”
“Everything I could copy.”
Marcus did not take the key.
“Oliver, what do you think is going to happen?”
Oliver’s eyes looked older than forty-three.
