Chapter 15 - THE YEAR SAMANTHA STOLE FROM HIM
Dr. Kent described the arrangement in detail.
Samantha first approached him with a request for sleeping medication.
She claimed Oliver suffered severe anxiety.
Then she asked for something stronger.
Something that could cause fatigue, confusion, and irregular heartbeats without appearing immediately suspicious.
Kent refused.
Samantha showed him evidence of his gambling debts and falsified billing records from years earlier.
Northstar paid those debts.
After that, Kent belonged to her.
He prescribed medication under false names.
Samantha added small amounts to Oliver’s evening tea or replaced pills inside his bottles.
The goal was not to kill him at first.
It was to weaken him.
When Oliver became too tired to attend meetings, Samantha gained control of company decisions.
When he tried to reconnect with Joyce, the dose increased.
When he questioned Northstar, he suffered another “cardiac episode.”
Kent then declared him medically fragile and advised isolation.
Samantha convinced Oliver that stress caused every relapse.
She told him Joyce was the greatest source of stress in his life.
Oliver believed her because the symptoms often appeared after arguments about his mother.
Samantha had created both the illness and the explanation.
The final dose came after Oliver told her he had filed the board resolution removing her.
Kent expected it to cause unconsciousness.
Samantha demanded more after learning Oliver still had a pulse.
“She said an autopsy would find the drugs,” Kent told prosecutors.
“That is why she needed cremation.”
The biggest remaining question involved the funeral director.
Paul Morrow denied knowing Oliver was alive.
Then investigators recovered deleted messages between Morrow and Samantha.
She promised him fifty thousand dollars to complete the cremation before two in the afternoon.
One message read:
NO EMBALMING. NO SECOND EXAMINATION. MY MOTHER-IN-LAW MAY CAUSE TROUBLE.
Morrow replied:
IF SHE ARRIVES, SECURITY WILL REMOVE HER.
The plan depended on Joyce arriving too late.
Samantha did not underestimate her grief.
She underestimated a mother’s need to touch her child one final time.
At the hospital, Oliver listened as Elena explained the evidence.
He looked toward Joyce.
“You saved me,” he said.
His voice was weak and rough, but it was his first spoken sentence.
Joyce closed her eyes as tears fell.
“No,” she answered. “You left enough truth for us to find you.”
Oliver shook his head.
“If you had believed them…”
“I didn’t.”
“You always knew when something was wrong.”
Joyce touched his cheek.
“And you spent too long thinking that meant I wanted to control you.”
Oliver looked down.
