Chapter 13 - THE FIRST WORD AFTER THE COFFIN

Oliver opened his eyes fully on the seventh day.

Joyce was sitting beside him.

For several seconds, he appeared confused.

Then his gaze moved around the hospital room.

Monitors.

IV lines.

Sunlight.

His mother.

Tears filled his eyes.

Joyce stood.

“You’re safe.”

Oliver tried to speak.

No sound came.

A breathing tube had irritated his throat, and the medication had left his muscles dangerously weak.

Joyce placed a communication board in front of him.

He slowly pointed to letters.

C-O-F-F-I-N.

“Yes,” Joyce whispered. “You were inside one.”

His eyes closed.

Tears ran toward his temples.

Joyce held his hand.

“I felt you breathe.”

He opened his eyes again.

His fingers moved toward the board.

S-A-M?

“She’s under investigation.”

D-R K?

“Him too.”

Oliver’s breathing quickened.

A nurse adjusted his oxygen.

Joyce leaned closer.

“You don’t have to tell us everything today.”

Oliver shook his head.

He pointed again.

F-I-R-E.

Joyce understood.

“The cremation?”

He nodded.

Then he spelled one more word.

H-E-A-R-D.

“You heard them talking about it?”

Another nod.

Oliver had drifted in and out of awareness while Samantha arranged the funeral beside his body.

He remembered Dr. Kent telling her that his skin was still warm.

He remembered Samantha ordering the funeral director not to embalm him because she wanted the cremation immediate.

He remembered being lifted.

Dressed.

Closed inside darkness.

Unable to move.

Unable to call out.

Joyce pressed her forehead against his hand.

“You are not there anymore.”

Oliver looked toward her.

M-O-M.

“I’m here.”

S-O-R-R-Y.

Joyce began crying.

“You came back. We have time for the rest.”

Outside the room, Elena received notice that Samantha had filed an emergency petition.

She claimed Joyce was manipulating Oliver while he lacked capacity.

She asked the court to prevent Joyce from controlling the company and restrict her access to Oliver’s room.

Elena read the filing twice.

Samantha was facing attempted-murder charges, yet she was still relying on the old story that Joyce was the dangerous mother.

This time, Oliver was awake.

And although he could not yet speak, his writing hand still worked.

👉 Samantha tried to separate Joyce from Oliver one final time—but the son she had declared dead was ready to tell the court whom he feared.
