Chapter 1 - THE BREATH INSIDE THE COFFIN

Joyce Carter pushed past her daughter-in-law and leaned over the open coffin.

“Open it. Now.”

The funeral home fell silent.

Oliver lay beneath a white satin lining in a black suit Joyce had never seen before. His skin was pale. His lips had almost no color.

White lilies surrounded him.

Samantha stood behind Joyce in a fitted black lace dress, one hand pressed dramatically over her mouth.

“You’re too late,” she whispered. “Please don’t make this harder.”

Joyce ignored her.

She placed one trembling hand against her son’s chest.

Nothing.

Then—

A faint movement.

So small she almost thought grief had invented it.

Joyce bent closer until her cheek hovered above Oliver’s mouth.

A thread of warm air touched her skin.

Her eyes widened.

“He’s breathing.”

Samantha stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.”

Joyce tore the decorative white cloth away from Oliver’s chest and pressed her fingers against his neck.

There.

A pulse.

Weak.

Slow.

But real.

“He’s alive!”

Several guests rose from their chairs.

Marcus Reed, Oliver’s oldest friend, pulled out his phone.

“We need an ambulance!”

The funeral director rushed forward.

“Ma’am, please step away from the deceased.”

Joyce turned on him.

“My son is not deceased.”

Oliver’s chest lifted again.

Barely.

Joyce looked at his wrist.

There was no hospital identification band. No official seal. Only a strip of medical tape that appeared to have been ripped away.

On the table beside the coffin lay a hurriedly signed authorization for cremation.

The scheduled time was less than one hour away.

Oliver’s attorney, Elena Price, picked up the document.

Her expression changed.

“This signature isn’t his.”

Samantha began moving toward the exit.

Joyce placed herself between Samantha and the door.

“What did you do?”

“I did nothing!”

Sirens grew louder outside.

Oliver’s fingers suddenly twitched against the white satin.

The entire room erupted.

Paramedics entered with a stretcher and oxygen equipment.

One of them checked Oliver and shouted toward his partner.

“He has a pulse. Get the airway kit!”

Samantha’s face turned white.

As the paramedics lifted Oliver from the coffin, a small black object fell from inside his jacket.

Marcus bent down and picked it up.

It was Oliver’s smartwatch.

The screen was cracked.

But a tiny red recording symbol was still blinking.

👉 Oliver was alive—but the damaged watch suggested he had tried to record what happened before someone placed him inside the coffin.
