Chapter 8 - The Question Elena Answered With One Finger
Pain medication made speech difficult.
Jason used that weakness immediately.
He answered every question for Elena.
He told nurses she had always been clumsy.
He described previous falls.
He said grief had damaged her concentration.
Margaret provided examples of Elena leaving burners on.
None of the stories were true.
Dr. Hill asked them to wait outside.
Jason refused.
“I am her husband.”
“You are interfering with treatment.”
“She becomes frightened without me.”
Under the blanket, Elena pressed one finger against Dr. Hill’s hand.
He understood the signal.
Dr. Hill called security.
Jason was escorted beyond the curtain.
Margaret followed while protesting that Elena needed family.
Once they were alone, Dr. Hill bent closer.
“Are you safe with your husband?”
Elena moved one finger.
No.
“Did your mother-in-law throw the oil?”
One movement.
Yes.
“Did your husband help her?”
Yes.
Dr. Hill documented the responses and requested a forensic burn specialist.
The specialist agreed the splash direction was inconsistent with Elena dropping a pot on herself.
The oil had traveled from above and in front of her.
Her forearm burns showed a defensive position.
Priya arrived with police officers and the footage.
Elena watched from the bed as Detective Lena Ortiz opened a laptop.
The first clip showed Jason demanding the signature.
The second showed Margaret lifting the pot.
The third showed them staging the soup after the attack.
Priya stopped the video before the impact replayed fully.
No one needed to make Elena watch it again.
Detective Ortiz stepped into the hallway.
Jason was still explaining that Elena had become paranoid after her father’s death.
The detective allowed him to finish.
Then she asked, “What kind of soup was she carrying?”
“Chicken.”
Margaret interrupted.
“Vegetable.”
Jason looked at her.
Detective Ortiz turned the laptop toward them.
The frozen image showed the pot of clear cooking oil.
Neither spoke.
Jason’s attorney was contacted.
Margaret attempted to leave the hospital.
An officer stopped her near the elevator.
Both were arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and attempted financial coercion.
Before officers led him away, Jason looked through the glass at Elena.
“You’re destroying everything.”
She could barely speak.
“You tried first.”
At 7:30 the next morning, the Marlow board assembled.
Jason’s empty chair remained at the table.
