Chapter 5 - The Agreement Hidden Under the Cutting Board

Three days before the board meeting, Jason became unusually affectionate.

He made breakfast.

Bought flowers.

Apologized for calling Elena unstable.

“I’m scared,” he admitted. “The company is under more pressure than you understand.”

Elena waited.

Jason placed a document on the kitchen island.

The ratification agreement.

If Elena signed, she accepted the nine-million-dollar loan and confirmed that the house and company shares had been pledged voluntarily.

A second document granted Jason temporary voting authority.

A third approved the sale of Marlow’s hospital division to his private company.

“You told me this was only about the loan,” Elena said.

“It’s all connected.”

“You’re buying part of Marlow with money borrowed against my property.”

“I’m saving it.”

“You’re selling it to yourself.”

Jason’s expression sharpened.

“Do not reduce years of work to one sentence.”

“Then explain it in a better one.”

Margaret entered carrying a tray.

She looked toward the papers.

“Has she signed?”

“No.”

Margaret set the tray down.

“Elena, your father trusted Jason.”

“My father warned me about him.”

The lie left Margaret’s face before her words did.

“Thomas never understood modern finance.”

“You told everyone he chose Jason as his successor.”

“He should have.”

Elena pushed the papers away.

“I’m attending the board meeting. The sale will not happen.”

Jason lowered his voice.

“You are not well enough for a board meeting.”

“I’m well enough to call the lender.”

He grabbed her wrist.

Elena looked toward the kitchen camera.

Its red indicator remained dark from the outside, but the device was recording.

Jason released her.

Then he smiled.

“You’re right. We should discuss this after dinner.”

He hid the documents beneath a cutting board.

Elena left the kitchen and sent Priya a message.

HE KNOWS I WON’T SIGN.

Priya replied immediately.

LEAVE NOW.

Elena packed a small bag.

Before she reached the front door, Margaret appeared with tears in her eyes.

“Please don’t abandon us over paperwork.”

“I’m not abandoning anyone.”

“Jason will go to prison.”

“That depends on what he did.”

Margaret’s sadness vanished.

“You would destroy your husband to protect a factory?”

“Elena,” Jason called from the kitchen, “come back in here.”

She heard the click of the deadbolt behind her.

Margaret had locked the front door.

👉 The cameras were recording, but Elena was now trapped inside the house with two people whose financial deadline had almost expired.
