Chapter 4 - The Accidents That Followed Every Question
The first accident occurred on the stairs.
Elena stepped onto the top tread and felt the carpet shift beneath her foot.
She caught the railing before falling.
Later, she found two fastening strips had been deliberately removed.
Jason blamed an old installation.
The second incident occurred in the garage.
Elena started her car and smelled gasoline.
A mechanic discovered a loosened fuel connection.
Margaret said the mechanic was exaggerating to charge more.
Then Elena became ill after drinking tea Margaret prepared.
She woke hours later with no memory of the evening.
Jason claimed she had mixed cold medicine with wine.
Elena rarely drank.
She visited her doctor privately.
Blood tests showed traces of a sedative that had never been prescribed to her.
The doctor asked whether someone in the house had access to medication.
Margaret took sleeping pills.
Elena said nothing.
She was still trying to find an explanation that did not require believing her husband and mother-in-law were deliberately harming her.
Then Priya Shah called.
Priya had served as Thomas Marlow’s attorney for twenty years.
She had noticed an attempted filing that would add Jason as co-trustee of Elena’s family assets.
The application included a statement from a psychiatrist claiming Elena suffered from severe cognitive impairment.
Elena had never met that psychiatrist.
Priya asked her to come to the office without telling Jason.
Elena brought the loan documents and medical results.
Priya studied them silently.
“This is not one bad financial decision.”
“What is it?”
“A plan to control your property by making you appear incapable.”
Elena’s hands became cold.
Priya explained that Jason could not legally use the house or controlling shares without Elena’s approval.
If she became medically incapacitated, however, he might seek temporary authority using the forged psychiatric report.
The recent accidents suddenly fit together.
Priya urged Elena to leave immediately.

Then she learned Jason had scheduled an emergency Marlow board meeting.
The agenda included selling the company’s hospital-meal division to Vale Recovery Partners.
The sale would give Jason control of Marlow’s most valuable contracts.
It would also eliminate nearly eight hundred jobs.
Elena’s vote could stop it.
The meeting was six days away.
Priya arranged safe housing and police consultation.
Elena insisted on collecting more evidence before leaving.
They installed hidden cameras in the kitchen, study, and dining room.
Every recording uploaded automatically to Priya’s secure server.
Elena also placed a panic button inside her watch.
“If anything feels wrong, press it once and leave,” Priya said.
