Chapter 16 - The Trial of the Kitchen Accident
Jason and Margaret sat at separate defense tables.
Neither looked at the other.
Jason’s attorney claimed Margaret acted impulsively during a family argument.
According to his version, Jason tried to stop the oil from spilling.
The kitchen footage showed his hand gripping Elena’s wrist.
It captured Margaret asking, “Has she signed?”
It captured Jason saying, “Hold on—do it before she calls Priya.”
Margaret’s attorney argued that Jason manipulated an elderly mother into protecting him.
The prosecutor played Margaret’s emails describing the accident plan.
Both defenses weakened each other.
Dr. Hill testified about the burns.
“The distribution was inconsistent with a person dropping a pot on herself.”
He described Elena’s finger signals.
Jason’s attorney suggested the doctor had assumed abuse before hearing both sides.
Dr. Hill answered calmly.
“I suspected abuse after the injury pattern contradicted their story. The video later confirmed it.”
Dr. Keller testified under a cooperation agreement.
He admitted writing the incapacity report without examining Elena.
He admitted the report described the planned injury before it occurred.
His testimony did not reduce his own responsibility.
It clarified the conspiracy.
Denise and Marcus testified about the financial scheme.
Insurance investigators explained the forged policy.
The lender presented Jason’s false collateral documents.
Priya explained the founder’s provision and the blocked company sale.
Finally, Elena took the stand.
Jason’s attorney asked why she had not left after the first suspicious accident.
“I was trying to understand what was happening.”
“Why install cameras instead of calling police?”
“Because separate incidents looked explainable. Together, they formed a pattern.”
“You remained in the house voluntarily.”
“I remained temporarily with legal support, emergency monitoring, and a plan to leave.”
“You knew recording an argument could strengthen your corporate position.”
“I knew evidence could protect me from being declared incompetent.”
The attorney showed a photograph of Elena after rehabilitation.
“You appear healthy now.”
Elena looked directly at the jury.
“Healing does not make the attack imaginary.”
The prosecutor asked one final question.
“What did Jason do after the oil struck you?”
Elena answered, “He hid the documents before he called for help.”
The courtroom became silent.
That choice revealed priority more clearly than any speech.
Jason protected the scheme first.
