Chapter 7 - The Oil and the Lie

Elena twisted away from Jason.
The first wave of oil struck her raised arm and shoulder.
Pain exploded through her body.
She screamed and fell against the kitchen island.
Margaret dropped the pot.
Oil spread across the tile.
For one second, all three of them stared at what had happened.
Then Jason moved.
Not toward the fire extinguisher.
Not toward cold running water.
Toward the hidden documents.
He swept the ratification agreement into a drawer.
Margaret began crying.
“What have I done?”
Elena looked at her.
There was panic in Margaret’s face.
But not surprise.
Jason grabbed a towel and pressed it against Elena’s burns.
She screamed again.
“Stop!”
He removed it only after realizing fabric could worsen the injury.
Then he picked up Elena’s phone.
“What do we say?”
Margaret’s crying stopped.
“She spilled it.”
“It was oil.”
“Then soup. Soup sounds normal.”
Elena stared at them from the floor.
Jason called emergency services.
“My wife had a kitchen accident,” he said calmly. “She spilled boiling soup.”
Margaret wiped the stove and placed a stockpot near the sink.
Jason poured broth into it.
The hidden camera captured that too.
He then noticed Elena’s watch.
The small light was blinking.
He ripped it from her wrist and crushed it beneath his shoe.
The recording had already uploaded.
Priya received the live alert and watched the assault from her office.
She called police before the ambulance arrived.
She also contacted Marlow’s independent board chair.
The founder’s emergency provision was activated.
No sale could proceed without Elena’s personal confirmation.
Jason did not know that.
He rode inside the ambulance, repeating the accident story.
Margaret followed in her car.
At the hospital, Jason demanded to remain beside Elena during every examination.
Dr. Marcus Hill refused.
Jason claimed his wife became confused under stress.
Margaret produced a copy of Dr. Keller’s preliminary psychiatric statement.
Dr. Hill read it.
The report was dated two days before the burns.
It described symptoms Elena supposedly displayed after the accident.
The doctor looked up slowly.
“How did he document her reaction to an injury that hadn’t happened yet?”
Jason took the paper back.
“It’s a clerical error.”
Dr. Hill contacted the hospital social worker.
Then he examined the direction of the burns.

The story continued falling apart.
👉 By the time Jason realized the hospital did not believe him, police had already received the kitchen footage.
