Chapter 10 - The Policy Jason Never Mentioned

The life-insurance policy was issued eighteen months earlier.

Jason was the primary beneficiary.

Margaret was the contingent beneficiary.

Elena’s signature appeared on the application.

She had never seen it.

The medical questionnaire claimed she suffered from fainting episodes and had a history of dangerous household accidents.

Jason had been building that history inside financial records long before the actual attack.

He documented the loose stair carpet.

The garage leak.

The sedative incident.

Each event appeared in emails to Margaret as proof that Elena was careless.

The accidents were not random preparations.

They were supporting evidence for an insurance claim.

The policy required a waiting period before certain exclusions expired.

That period ended twelve days before the oil attack.

Priya explained the discovery to Elena in the hospital.

Elena stared at the ceiling.

“Did he want me dead?”

“We cannot know exactly what he intended in that moment.”

“The oil could have killed me.”

“Yes.”

Priya did not soften the truth.

Detectives searched the Marlow house.

They found copies of the insurance policy inside Jason’s locked study.

Beside them was a folder labeled CONTINUITY.

It contained two plans.

If Elena survived but remained hospitalized, Jason would use the incapacity statement to control her shares.

If she died, the insurance payment would repay part of Vale Recovery’s loan.

The company sale would proceed under authority Jason claimed through the marital estate.

Both versions ended with Jason gaining Marlow’s hospital contracts.

Margaret’s handwritten notes appeared across the pages.

Keep the kitchen ordinary.

No outside witnesses.

Make sure she has taken the medication first.

Elena had not taken the sedative that evening.

She poured the tea into a plant after noticing residue at the bottom of the cup.

That was why she remained alert enough to resist and activate the camera.

Investigators tested the cup.

It contained the same sedative previously found in her blood.

Charges expanded to attempted murder, insurance fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy.

Jason’s attorney claimed the folder was hypothetical estate planning.

Margaret claimed she had written notes while frightened about Elena’s health.

Then police recovered an audio file from Jason’s office.

Margaret’s voice said:

“If the oil doesn’t finish it, Keller signs incapacity and we move before she can speak.”

Jason answered:

“Nothing happens until I know the camera system is off.”

He had checked the visible security panel.

Priya’s hidden cameras operated independently.

👉 Jason had planned for every outcome except Elena preserving evidence outside the system he controlled.
